Organic Farming & Butterfly Sanctuary

Concentrated action to restore migratory and breeding habitat throughout the monarch butterfly’s spring and summer range can help rebuild populations relatively quickly. We at Ocean Park Estate and Gardens Inc. have created a butterfly sanctuary and habitat to preserve the monarch butterfly.

Migratory & Breeding Habitat

  • The monarch butterflies’ migratory and breeding habitat includes California prairie, a blend of grasses, native wildflowers, and milkweed that, as documented by John Muir in the 1870s, once carpeted the Central Valley.
  • Milkweed is the critical component. Monarch butterflies exclusively lay eggs on several species of native milkweed, and they only feed on milkweed during the caterpillar stage.
  • This same habitat, California prairie, provides food and shelter to a wide variety of pollinators, including native bees, bumblebees and dozens of bird and mammal species.

Purpose of Creating a Sanctuary

Is to help re-populate the monarch butterfly and educate everyone on the urgency of restoring and maintaining the migratory breeding habitat for the monarch butterfly. By educating the public, we are hoping to plant seeds, so they follow and create other natural habitats for the monarch butterfly.

Our sanctuary and garden will include the following:

  • There will be designated pathways for the public so they can view the monarch in its natural habitat without disturbing it.
  • We are creating an organic farming project for students to learn about organic farming and horticulture. Organic farming is a benefit to creating a greener Earth.
  • Build a stage for educational speakers to teach students and individuals about the monarch butterfly and organic farming.
  • A large, glass atrium over 2000 sq ft with butterflies for visitors to see.
  • Glamping Tents and Glamping Trailers will be available for visitors to enjoy overnight lodging.
  • This project will be an ongoing endeavor that we want to be passed down for generations to come. This privately-owned land of approximately 3¾ acres is located in Lancaster CA.
